Every quarter we send a selection of important news, updates on key programs and trade missions as well as a note from our CEO on the latest developments in the international engagement space within the Victorian Government.

From the Chief Executive Officer

Happy New Year! I hope you managed to find some quality time to rest and recharge over the holiday season, and are now feeling ready for what I’m sure will be a fantastic 2019 for all of us.

Since the release of our last newsletter, some exciting changes have taken place post the recent State Election that I’m eager to share with you.

Welcome the Hon. Martin Pakula MP, Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade

Firstly, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new Minister, the Hon. Martin Pakula who will be covering a number of portfolios including: Jobs, Innovation and Trade; Tourism, Sport and Major Events; and Racing.

When I met with him recently, the enthusiasm he expressed about the opportunities for trade was inspiring and a great sign for the work we do. We look forward to working with him and providing you with opportunities to also connect with him shortly.

We also take this opportunity to thank our former Minister, the Hon. Philip Dalidakis for his energy, passion, advocacy and championing of Victoria’s international engagement efforts.

Departmental Changes

There has been some machinery of government changes to the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR), where Trade Victoria used to belong.

As of 1 January 2019, we have become part of the newly formed Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR). The Department is focused on ensuring Victoria’s economy benefits all Victorians - by creating more jobs for more people, building thriving places and regions, and nurturing inclusive communities.

Farewell Trade Victoria. Welcome Global Victoria

Reflecting the purpose to place global engagement at the core of the new department’s strategy and the Victorian Government’s agenda more broadly, our name has also changed.

As of the 1st of January, we became Global Victoria. Global Victoria exists to:

  • build the international skills and capabilities of Victorians and Victorian firms across the State
  • connect local businesses to global opportunities
  • promote Victoria’s world-class industry talents and lifestyle to the world
  • support the attraction and retention of global talent to our State through business, investor and skilled migration
  • advocate for the best industry policy and settings for Victorian industry to compete globally, take a holistic approach to Victoria’s international engagement efforts and take a leadership position across Government.

The name change to Global Victoria symbolises an outstanding opportunity for us all to build a strong, connected, modern trade facilitation agency that spearheads and supports Victoria in the international arena. And together, we will work collaboratively to deliver the Victorian Government’s agenda and continue to deliver great results for Victorian exporters.

Over the next month or so, we’ll be incorporating the name change into our digital channels, which will include a new URL for our website: global.vic.gov.au. Watch this space!

Trade Mission Calendar 2019

The team at Global Victoria have also been working hard to put together an extensive trade mission calendar for the rest of this financial year.

Regardless of your industry, if you plan on starting 2019 with a commitment to step out onto the global stage, or you’re looking to strengthen your existing global ties, I highly recommend you check out our trade missions.

For many Victorian businesses, taking part in our trade mission program has been the pathway to international success, as well as making important global connections that have played a huge role in supporting their export journey.

If you have any queries or feedback you’d like to provide about our trade missions, we’d love to hear from you. Our industry trade specialists are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Welcome Gerard Seeber, Victorian Commissioner to the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey

Finally, I would like to welcome the Government’s new Commissioner to the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, Gerard Seeber.

Gerard brings extensive experience to the role having worked in dynamic markets undergoing dramatic change such as the Middle East, Europe and South America.

We look forward to him leading the team at the Victorian Government Trade and Investment Office in Dubai to further strengthen our ties with the region.

We also thank our former Commissioner to the region, John Butler who did an outstanding job representing the Government for close to a decade in Dubai. We are fortunate that John joins the Global Victoria team in Melbourne as an Executive Director heading our strategic partnerships and projects.

Again, on behalf of the team at Global Victoria, we’re very excited about the recent changes to our division and look forward to working alongside you to support your exports, as well as continuing to create global connections for people, communities, businesses, industry and government through our expansive and world-class international network.

Until our next newsletter, here’s to a successful start to the New Year for you and your business.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Gönül Serbest
CEO, Global Victoria
