Case study: Hipster Whale
Small Melbourne-based games developer, Hipster Whale, turned the free-to-play Crossy Road app into a global trend – hitting more than 50 million downloads in the first 90 days after its November 2014 release.
Crossy Road went on to reach more than 130 million downloads in its first 18 months, and the app has fast become a major export for Hipster Whale, with 96 per cent of their market being international players.
Hipster Whale co-founder and Crossy Road creator, Matt Hall said that receiving the Governor of Victoria Export Award in 2015 was an important acknowledgement of Melbourne's video gaming industry, which he believes tends to fly under the banner of public recognition.
Hipster Whale has gone on to expand the Crossy Road brand by offering its global fan base a range of apparel through their online store.
